Going Back to the Basics

Sometimes, in order to solve a problem, you have to go all the way back to the beginning and relearn what you had learned in the past. This includes parenting:

This weekend, I was reminded of what we had learned a long time ago from an organization known as RIP(Regional Intervention Program) which is mainly a sort of parenting style program that helps those of us with children who are on the spectrum.

In the parent/teacher conference, one of the teachers stated that what they were seeing was a power and control issue with my son, so I tested this out last night.  The main thing that I did, was to ignore him when he asked for my attention   This is the one thing that he wants a majority of the time; he wants our attention so we can use that to our advantage at home.

As a parent, I want to make sure that my child is well equipped to handle the challenges that lie ahead and sometimes, I forget to make use of the tools that I have to assist me.  I know that he is capable of more and perhaps we all are and we just don't realize it.

In addition, he is on a new medicine that the doctor is trying on him, which is a little scary for us, since the last time we attempted to change the medicine, he was miserable.  At the moment, we have not seen any ill effects due to this new medicine but it may take time for any effects at all to appear.

Still, we as parents have to remember what we learned and keep applying that knowledge and keep using it so that our children can learn well.

As my teacher once said to me, "okay let's go back to the basics"
